What's on your workdesk? Wednesday 498!

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Its been a long time since I posted as I've been super busy working on my book but I wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and give you all a little update. I should have more time in the new year to post regularly with whats on my workdesk!

So the book is pretty much done and edited there are just a few gaps which need filling, its hard to tell till its all been layout by the typesetter. As you can see there were quite a few, mainly small spelling/Grammar edits, and a few additions! I believe they appreciated my OCD colour tags to show which pages had corrections/additions ๐Ÿ˜‚ At the moment the estimated month of publication is April; we timed our cruise holiday well so I'm likely to be away and without internet when its published ๐Ÿ™ˆ

So this week on my desk is the beginnings of a new box as one of the gaps is on the page about fabric placement so I thought I would make a Stripy box with the lines all matching from the lid down to the base, there will be a west highland terrier appliqued with the tartan on the lid. This will also be a limited kit for sale in the new year as only one or two photos of it will be in the book and then it has more than one use rather than making a whole box for one or two photos, and for fun too! No price worked out yet but if anyone is interested (the tartan/plain red interior fabric wont be the same as that is all I have; I'll find something as close as possible tho) then leave a comment and I will let you know when its on the website which wont be launched till the new year.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday 474!

Morning Everyone!

Just wanted to give everyone an update...I've reached 50k words and still have a bit left to do whoop! With about month to go though I'm really please with how it is all progressing, although I've only got a couple of weeks left where little man is in Preschool, not sure if I'll be done with editing and last minute photos and illustrations before hes finished but fingers crossed! He has his first proper school visit today to meet his new teacher so I will be taking work to do in the park later while hes there (because an hour isn't really enough time to bother coming back home for), cant believe that hes going to school in September even if he is ready to go!

Once the book is finished I can get back to working on some more projects and a new website with the aim of starting to plan some classes to teach from home if I can, not sure how that is going to work with the puppy though as he get very excited when we have visitors! He is a rather large dog now (he often sleeps on the floor now because hes too big to stretch out fully on the sofa๐Ÿ™ˆ) but very friendly!

Thanks for Visiting!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday 467!

This morning my work desk is now occupied by my laptop and a separate monitor, that can only mean one thing....I've finished all the boxes! (I may have misjudged the time it would take and after telling hubby I would definitely be finished by Thursday....7 more hours over the weekend and I was finally finished ๐Ÿ™ˆ). Still its all done mow and I can concentrate on writing. I've written the instructions for 4 boxes so far and have started the 5th out of 10. I've also written most of the first chapter prior to finishing the boxes so once the instructions are done I can work on Chapter Intros, the embroidery instructions (the detail of which will depend on how many words I have to 'fill') and the final chapter which will be advice for making your own, although none of the box instructions have exact measurements because people may not want to make theirs the same size as mine as their objects/materials will differ in size to the ones I've used.

I'm a bit late writing this post this morning because we only decided last night that little man was going to dress up as a King/Knight/Captain America (as that's the only shield we have) for pre-school's Royal Wedding themed dress up day rather than the Sully (Monsters Inc) costume that he insisted he was going to wear a couple of days ago! Then this morning he also decides that he wants a sword belt so he can take his sword...which we don't have. Thankfully a quick rummage in my stash of ribbons and bits turned up a piece of black elastic which just so happened to be the exact size I needed, a long piece of black ribbon and a belt clip. So this morning I sat in bed with him watching Tv and started sewing together a sword belt...thankfully it didn't take very long to do. I've sewn the sword holder so that he can't remove the sword from the belt, hopefully pre-school will allow him to wear it and he will be under strict instructions to only remove the belt and give it to his teachers if he doesn't want it any more and under no circumstances wave the sword around!

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and I haven't forgotten my promise to show you more of the finished embroidery so here it is!

I'm not sure if I will have much to post about over the next few months as I will mostly be writing but I will try and post when I can!

Thanks for Visiting!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday 466!

What a lovely few days its been! I've been up early again this morning stitching in the lovely warm sunshine that's streaming through my office window! On my work desk are the ribbons I ordered a few weeks ago (the first lot didn't turn up ๐Ÿ˜”) that I've finally been able to start using this morning. Next to the ribbons is the Ribbon work book which I absolutely love, not just because it was written by a friend of mine (Sophie Long) but because it is a really great book on ribbon embroidery. The embroidery is safely covered in tissue until I can continue this afternoon when little man is in pre-school.

The final box had grown a lot since last week and just needs doors with handles and a lid for the embroidery so I'm definitely on track to finish it this week. This means that after this week my workdesk is probably just going to be photos of my laptop and a separate monitor (which will probably have photos on as I work on writing the book. While I feel sad that that stitching parts are now all done I'm glad that I can start making on progress on bringing the book together. Also my laptop can go anywhere to I can move my desk outside! I have set myself another deadline to complete all of the box instructions by the end of this month so that I know what word count I have left to use to bring it all together and have June&July to edit. I have some illustrations of alternative box ideas to do  as well so its not all computer based! August is fast approaching but at least there is only two weeks between pre-school finishing and my deadline, this means I can spend the summer relaxing in the garden with little man and taking trips out before he starts school in September!

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and I hope you will be back next week to see the progress I will have made on the final box, I'll save sharing the embroidery till next week when its more completed.  Hubby is hopefully working from home again tomorrow, it worked really well last week so look forward to us spending a bit more time together, even if we are working. If you just can't wait to see it you can head over to find me on Facebook and Instagram where I try and post as often as I can so you will find more on there before my next Woyww post!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday 465!

I have the first part of a new box on my desk, yay!! I was able to finish the last one before we left for our holiday....just. I was working on it all day Thursday while little man was in pre-school, again in the evening after he was in bed till 9.30ish (I still had to pack, hubby had done most of it for me). I even got up extra early (4am) to feed the puppy in what turned out to be a failed attempt at stopping his car sickness (definitely didn't) and decided to just get it finished because I knew it was so close to being done and after an hour was back in bed for an hour or so till we had to get up to leave!

It was definitely worth getting up super early tho as it meant I could relax and enjoy our holiday without thinking about it! I can't show you the whole box just yet but here's a photo of the finished working lock for the door and the door which wasn't quite finished being sewn together at that point. Sorry for the bad lighting, I'm still thinking about how I'm going to get amazing photos of this one for the book, this box is for wedding cards but unfortunately I don't know anyone who is getting married before August to ask if I can take photos in the reception venue before hand so might have to see if there's a wedding fair somewhere....

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and I hope you will be back next week to see the progress I will have made on the final box. Hopefully I can get loads done tomorrow even with hubby working from home, he doesn't like listening to music while he works, I can't work in silence (a definite advantage of working from home) so I'll definitely be making use of the wireless headphones on my desk! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram where I try and post as often as I can so you will find more on there if you can't wait till next Woyww!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 464!

The ribbons finally arrived on Thursday!!! Well the replacement parcel did anyway...the other is lost somewhere within the Royal Mail probably never to be seen again! Luckily I still had plenty to do in the mean time so no harm done. Not the best photo, the middle colour is actually a dark purple! Can't wait to use them once the current box is finished, its still on my workdesk but hopefully it will be finished before I have to pick up little man on Thursday from his first pre-school trip!

I am so pleased with how this one is working out, definitely my favorite, hopefully the door on the other side will go smoothly and not give me too much of a headache! I made a start on the lock casing while I was waiting for the ribbon so just need to finish attaching the white Rabbit to the box later and then I can start working on the door. I have actually changed a small bit of the lock casing since this photo as I wasn't completely happy with it. The tops will also be covered with the white linen, I was waiting to see if there are big enough off cuts from the embroideries before covering them  rather than cutting into the big piece I have left.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and I'm sure I will have finished the penultimate box by this time next week and made a start on the final one, although we are away over the weekend so will have to see how much I can get done this week before we go! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 463!

Morning everyone, I got up early this morning to carry on working on my white work rabbit, I managed about half an hour before little man woke up, typical, so I'm now sat in bed typing this up while he watches cartoons for a bit. Still at least I managed to get all the couched thread secured on the back just his whiskers left to stitch.

I've managed to make more progress on this piece by getting up early with hubby so I hope the box will be nearly/completed by the end of this week. Unfortunately it seems as though the ribbons I ordered have been lost in the post as they are yet to arrive even though they were sent First class ๐Ÿ˜ž I have to phone the supplier back today once the post has been and they will send some more out recorded so hopefully the embroidery will only be at a standstill for a day or so. I'm secretly hoping they turn up after some more have been sent so I have some to play with after the book is done, or to do a giveaway with on facebook/Instagram to gain more followers which I plan to do anyway. At least I hadn't cut the card for the exterior of the box and the lock so I still have things I can prepare while I wait and if I somehow manage to get all that done before the ribbons arrive I can make a start on the final box so no real harm done as I want to be finished with the making by the beginning of May so I have a big chunk of time (which I know will fly by) to get the rest of book written (I've written about a 5th but that's still 10K words!).

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and hopefully I will have made finished the penultimate box by this time next week, depending on when the replacement ribbons arrive! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 462!

Morning! I managed to get a lot more done last week than I was anticipating considering that it was the start of the Easter holidays last week and also our little mans 4th birthday (not sure where that time has gone!). Hubby booked of most of last week so when we weren't preparing for the birthday celebrations of having family time I was able to get in some stitching. So on my work desk this week is the white work part of my penultimate box as I managed to complete the Black work section last week. I've even taken to staying up once the pup had woken us up for his breakfast (5.30am ๐Ÿ˜ด) so get as much time in before little man woke as possible, and it's really paying off.  The Roses are using Ribbon work which I love embroidering (My friend Sophie Long has written a really good book on Ribbon work if anyone is interested in learning more). I will also be using a pulled work technique but the rest will be general embroidery stitches to keep it simple.

Below is the finished Black work which will be making up the door of the box, and the progress I've made on the box so far which cant be completed until the embroidery is finished.

Its still the Easter holidays this week but I am managing to get bits and pieces done here, especially written work (I'm taking a break so I actually get my post written in advance or it wont get done!) and there so hopefully I will have nearly completed the white work parts ready to complete the box next week when little man is back in pre-school.

I've also finalised the design for the last box, hopefully by the time I've finished the current box the Ribbons I've ordered will have arrived.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and hopefully I will have made plenty of progress on the penultimate box by this time next week! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 460!

Hi Everyone,

Really need to try and get these posts written out on a tuesday evening, time just seems to fly once its little mans bed time!

As you can see I've been sticking to my work schedule and have moved on to another box this week, the second to last one! It seems like the last one was made in a flash and this one is going just as fast, I've actually made more progress than the photo. I'm sure there will be something that slows me down later tho as this is slightly more complicated with a working lock. I think this will probably be my favorite, even though I actually hated Alice in wonderland (Disney) as a child. I was inspired by the revival of Gilmore Girls, in the last episode of A year in the Life, when one of the Characters has an Alice in Wonderland themed wedding! (its been out a while but I don't like spoiling TV or films for people).

Here's a little snapshot of the embroidery on the last box. Its Easter holidays for two weeks so not sure if I will get time to do much stitching or just written work. Still have a day and a half of child free time before then so I'm sure I'll have some progress to show you on my latest box!

Oh and we just managed to scrape enough parents at our EGM on Monday to dissolve the old pre-school charity to after Easter it should all be over and done, hooray!!

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and hopefully I will have made plenty of progress on the penultimate box this time next week! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 458!

Thanks for all your lovely comments last week,  I was told ages ago that if I reply to your comments  on my page that you might not get them....hence why I've replied here, is that still the case? If so I will try this week to reply in your own comments section when I look at your blogs!

Committee things have calmed down a bit but I've had two meetings in a week (one unofficial with a nice glass of prosecco). Unfortunately its not turned out how we all thought and it is definitely not just about fundraising, despite us being told that. It turns out that if the pre-school is unincorporated that all members (parents) but especially committee members are in fact financially liable....๐Ÿ‘ฟoh yep what a nice present the previous committee and management left us (we also have a new manager). So we have between the eight of us spend the last 7-8 months filling out lots of paperwork to change the legal status to a CIO, the final part of which was registering with Ofsted as a new setting...we were told it could take up to 25 weeks but because we also had a very good inspection under the old pre-school in January they approved it in two weeks...which lead to last weeks rushing around to get things done with plenty of time by the end of this month! Still at least it will then all be over and we can celebrate an awesome achievement! Probably with plenty of Prosecco!

Enough about that! Margaret, no I didn't paint the fabric, its been sat in my stash waiting for the right project for about 8-9 years ๐Ÿ™ˆ, it is lovely tho and I think its actually an Ikat weave. Unfortunately while I have finished it I cant share the finished piece (so I've shared the back instead) so you will have to wait until the book is out, sorry! I've now got a deadline to finish the final three boxes, so I can concentrate on writing, in the next 6-8 weeks (depending on how Easter goes I will probably spend more time writing) so fingers crossed! So on that note on my work desk today is my plan for the next box which has changed several times since I first started, mainly because I need to speed things up! I absolutely love working in my new office! Still have several boxes of fabrics in our bedroom to sort out into the white unit but its livable for now!

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and hopefully I will have made plenty of progress on the next box this time next week! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 457!

Hi Everyone, this weeks post is going to have to be a very quick one. Firstly I want to say thank you for all your comments on the last post, I really wanted to get back to you all at the weekend but something urgent came up at the end of last week so once the stress has passed I will get back to you all, I really do appreciate it and look forward to checking out all your posts! This is why today's post is going to be short as I've been tied up with other things, lets just say for now don't join a pre-school committee without knowing the full implications, I'll be Proud once all the hard work is done and I'm grateful that the other members are all supporting each other but it certainly wasn't a stress I needed, definitely not just fundraising!

So despite that I have managed to progress with the silk shading but for today it might have to remain as it is on my New desk ๐Ÿ˜ข, hopefully I can find some time at the weekend but I'm doing a class on Sunday to make a silver ring or two, not with the silver Clay but with sterling silver so I am very much looking forwards to that after this week! oh and the office is nearly there, I just have to sort the boxes of fabrics into the new white storage unit and tidy my shelf and desk.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and hopefully I will have finished my silk shading this time next week and with less stress going on! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 456!

I never seem to be able to get a good run of WOYWW's too many things seem to get in the way, the week before last was half term so didn't have any child free time and we were giving our office a make over, more on that in a bit. Then last week I was making the most of my child free time to complete my 6th box and make a start on the seventh which features the Silk shaded Crocus I've started above, that's only about 5 hours work as I started the box first until I realised that despite having loads of sewing threads I didn't have quite the right colour! Not great excuses really but now that the office is almost complete it will make working in the evening easier as hubby can I work in there together on our separate projects so wont feel guilty about working when he's home.

As you can see the office make over went really well, one day to remove the awful paper, one day to paint and a final day to replace the carpet with wooden flooring. Its not perfectly painted but it will do for now and is 100% better than it was before. The new chairs arrived Monday and the new desks should be arriving this morning, weather permitting as we've had a small amount of snow yesterday (which made our walk more interesting!) but we are expecting more.

I spend a little bit of time last Friday experimenting with making some handles and feet for my biggest box because I just cant find anything I like which is also the right size. Pinterest is amazing for ideas and I came across the idea of using Fimo or polymer clay as draw knobs so as I just so happened to have some I thought I would give it a go. All I needed to get was some small flat head screws with nuts. Whilst in Hobby Craft getting the threads I needed I spotted Glittery Fimo but typically as they didn't have the right colour I thought I would test adding Glitter in too. It all worked perfectly, the only decision left then was deciding on the shape to make them, I've decided its probably best to keep them simple, this is not the final version (as I haven't made them yet) but will give you an idea of what I'm gibbering on about.

Yesterday I wasn't able to work anymore on the silk shading due to a poorly child (who seemed better an hour after deciding not to take him to preschool...) so during Puppy Sonic's naps I've been sorting photos and working on instructions on my laptop, not very exciting but needed to be done. When he was awake I was able to make a start on a mini project of a coffee cup cosy/sleeve. We are trying to reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging we use and while we have had the resuable cups for a while hadn't really thought about the cardboard sleeve which you still need to use. It was so easy/quick to make that I've finished mine already and although he didn't like the pink/orange colours hubby liked the idea too so I've started making him one as well. I cant take credit for the pattern as I found it on Pinterest Click here for pattern.

I thought you might like the sleeping puppy in the background, although hes so big now people aren't always sure hes a puppy ๐Ÿ™ˆ, yes that is his sofa...

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and hopefully I will have made more progress on my silk shading this time next week, you never know I might even have finished it (wishful thinking). Fingers crossed the new furniture will arrive soon and I can make a start building it so you can all see our nice probably not tidy for long office completed. You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 453!

Hi Everyone,

As you can see the box from last week is still on my work desk! Its been slow going because the outside is covered with leather...my fingers are sore and I've had to use pliers to push the needle through and pull it back out! As you can see I've had a bit of a sort out and bought a new storage box so all of my equipment is in one place (rather than 4!)

I've also been having a sort out of the whole room which will be redecorated, hopefully soon but I'm not counting on it! things always take ages in this house. The horrible wall paper (it has flowers embossed, not my taste) and red walls will be going (it was the old owners teenage boys room). My husband worked really hard to get big promotion before Christmas which means that he might be able to work from home a couple of days a week so we are trying to sort the room out for us both to work in there....he can't work with clutter (I call it creativity but whatever!). So sacrifices have to be made...not getting rid of too much but we have re-homed around a 100 books to a charity shop (we kept some but they've gone in the loft), the bookcase to the dump (it was too damaged to give to charity) and my sister re-homed the metal unit to her garage. I've put a load of discard sewing patterns in the Recycling, I know its a shame but I was never going to have time/the figure to make most of them and as they were free/discontinued stock from my old job I couldn't sell them and its freed up a draw and box so I can save more important things!

Before:

After so far:

The window which was put in two years ago still needs finishing (as I said this house is a work in progress) the table and the desk will be going to charity if they want them and will be replaced with two new desks (which I'm sure I will end up using both when hubby isn't home) as the current set up doesn't really work that well as its a bit cramped. The Kallax unit is staying but will need some inserts or boxes to keep it tidy, and maybe another layer as my fabric stash is stored in boxes on top, I was trying to persuade Hubby to let me have another small once but he doesn't want the room to be too cluttered when hes working so I guess I'll have to pick my battles!

it will be nice to finally be able to put some frames on the wall too, especially my certificate and some pieces of my work. The carpet is going to be replaced with hardwood flooring as its high pile  so when I dropped a small box of tiny beads on the floor the other week a lot were lost the carpet/hoover ๐Ÿ˜ข Pins are another issue with carpets so wooden flooring seemed the best solution. Now I just need to persuade hubby to go to the dreaded Ikea (love the meatballs, hate how busy it gets) and B&Q to get what we need.

Now I just need to decide if this thread is really worth untangling, it is rather nice...maybe a tiny bit more time...

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and I will have something more interesting for you all to see next week, I say hopefully because it is half term! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

Once upon a time....

This once upon a time series of posts is all about having a look back and showing you the embroideries from my Apprenticeship at the Royal School of Needlework.

This weeks once upon a time is my Fine White work, this was worked during the final year of my apprenticeship. Fine White work is always worked on a 55 thread per inch linen and uses various White work techniques such as Pulled thread, Drawn thread work, counted stitches, eyelets, padded satin, trailing as well as creating layers with fabric attached behind and net darning worked with lace like designs. This white work is always mounted on a coloured fabric background in order to show off the various layers and usually worked during the summer months when day light is at its best (well as good as UK weather gets anyway!).

If you would like to see more of my work and the current projects that I am working on then please head over to my Facebook or Instagram pages.

Thank you for visiting my blog, hopefully you enjoyed looking at my work and will come back next week for a new throwback Thursday!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 452!

So I know I've been a bit quiet again lately but I've been super busy working on my current project, and its a big one!

Not sure if I should be announcing this or not but here goes, I'm writing a Book! This is why my projects have been top secret so far but if I don't start marketing it myself then maybe I'll at least sell a couple ๐Ÿ˜‰!

The book I'm Writing/Making is Step by Step guide on how to make handmade boxes with embroidery on. So far I have made Four and a Half boxes and I have four or five more to make before me deadline in August...eek! My publishers are very happy with the progress I've made so far and hopefully they will be happy with the changes I will be making as I've realised how much work I've set myself so I'm changing the structure slightly to save myself work and time

On my work desk this week is my half completed fifth box which is tiny and a little bit fiddly because its for a Tie clip and Cuff links but I'm sure the recipient (my husband) will be very happy with once it is completed! Here's a photo of one of the pieces with my finger for scale so you can see what I working with size wise....

This is where I left it yesterday as I had to go and pick up my son from Preschool, This means I only have 15 hrs a week, plus a couple of hours at the weekends (so we still have family time) to work on the boxes/book. Hoping I will get this box finished this week as he is in preschool all day tomorrow. I'm not sure if I will have much to show you next week as I think I need to start writing the instructions of boxes 2-5 (yes I have only written one so far and general bits and pieces but I've been having too much fun making!)

Sorry about the photo quality but all photos on my blog have to be taken from my phone as for hopefully obvious reasons any photos from the book will be subject to copy write so there will be much better ones in the book, all taken myself  as I go (I think I've taken nearly 1000 so far but they wont all make the cut).

I am also starting a series of Throwback Thursdays over on my Instagram and Facebook (links below) pages showing the embroideries I completed during the three years of my apprenticeship at the Royal School of Needlework, I may even do a blog post if I can find a bit of time so please pop over to see them if you have time! Last weeks throwback Thursday was a photograph of my Apprenticeship certificate from 2009 which was signed by Her Majesty the Queen herself (not a printed version real ink!). I really do count myself lucky that I was able to be one of the final group of Six Apprentices before they decided to join with University of the Creative Arts to create a degree program. I am also a graduate of UCA's Textile Degree in printed Textiles for Fashion and Interiors, 2012.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and I will have something interesting for you all to see next week, hopefully! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram!

Thanks for Visiting!
